Chapter 6

The next morning, Libby was up early and heard Bella stirring above her. She lightly ran up the stairs and entered the little girl’s room. A soft whimper came from the crib, but when Libby appeared, Bella’s face lit with a smile. Chubby arms extended toward her, begging Libby to pick her up, which she did without hesitation. The chortle of delight was a sweet reward.

“You seem like you’ve never met a stranger, little one,” she laughed. Tiny hands patted her cheeks as Bella let loose a stream of chatter that endeared her to Libby all the more. Then a sour smell wafted up to her nose, making her aware of a very pressing need. “But you do need a change, don’t you sweetheart?”

With quick, deft movements, Libby removed the soiled diaper, gave Bella a thorough cleaning and had her in a new diaper a few minutes later. The old one was tossed in a bucket for washing. With Bella in arms, she went to the window and pushed open the curtains.

The sun was just rising over the horizon, but the house was already coming alive down below. Clatter could be heard from the kitchen and the aroma of fresh coffee reached her and pulled her downstairs.

“Let’s go see what’s for breakfast, shall we?” she asked her little ward playfully. “Perhaps I can wrangle a donut or some other delectable delight out of your cook. She certainly seemed to be a jolly sort when I met her in passing yesterday.”

They had just exited the room when they bumped into Alex who was shrugging into a light jacket. His expression of surprise was so comical that Libby nearly laughed out loud. Instead, she composed herself and gave him a cool look.

“Uh…Miss Thompson,” he began. “I’m glad to catch you alone. That is, I mean…I wanted to speak to you. Um…well…”

His fumbling gave her a chance to gain the upper hand.

“Mr. Montgomery,” she interrupted, using his more formal title to his face. “I have had the night to reconsider your offer. After some prayer and contemplation, I’ve decided to accept. I will stay here and care for Miss Bella. She and I are very well-suited and I believe that we will bring each other much fulfillment.”

She noticed with quiet pleasure how shocked he looked at her fine speech. Although she hadn’t been raised in a high-class society, she knew their ways from the many books she’d read on manners and decorum.

“Oh…well, I’m glad to hear it. Uh, were you two just, er, going down to breakfast?” He looked slightly uncomfortable for a moment as though his shirt was too small or his tie too tight. He squirmed a little before reaching out for Bella. “I can take her down for you,” he offered.

Bella squawked a little and looked straight at her father. “No! No Da-da!”

Those were the first real words Libby had heard from the child’s mouth, and even though they weren’t entirely respectful, she couldn’t help but laugh a little. She was secretly pleased that the child preferred her.
